Dick Durbin’s Radical Immigration Views at Work – Authored Amnesty Legislation for Convicted Felon
Unwilling to Stand Up for Illinois Taxpayers, But Willing to Fight for Convicted Felons
(Western Springs, IL) – "Today, we see just how radical Dick Durbin’s amnesty plan for illegal aliens really is – Senator Durbin will even fight to give amnesty to illegal immigrants convicted of felonies," said Dr. Steve Sauerberg, a Republican candidate for the United States Senate. Sauerberg is calling on Senator Durbin to publicly withdraw his support for Elvira Arellano. Arellano is an illegal immigrant and convicted felon for whom Senator Durbin introduced legislation in 2003 that would have granted her amnesty.
Arellano illegally entered the United States for the first time in 1997, and was caught and deported. After being deported to Mexico, Arellano again broke the law and snuck across the border. She was arrested again in December 2002 in Chicago, and was convicted of social security fraud. It was after this arrest and conviction that Senator Durbin introduced legislation in the Senate (S.B. 1623), which would have given Arellano – a multiple time law breaker and convicted felon – permanent resident status.
"We are a country of laws. It is outrageous that Senator Durbin would fight for the rights of an illegal alien who had repeatedly shown nothing but contempt for the laws of this country," continued Sauerberg. "To reward the behavior of a convicted felon is an absolute insult to the millions of hard-working law-abiding immigrants in this country."
Arellano would have been deported in 2006, were it not for the delay caused by Durbin’s legislation. She was only recently deported after leaving Chicago to speak at a rally for illegal immigrants in Los Angeles.
"Dick Durbin owes the people of Illinois an apology. Instead of fighting for Illinois families, seniors and taxpayers, he is instead fighting for amnesty for convicted felons. This is how out of touch Dick Durbin has become," concluded Sauerberg. "The people of Illinois deserve better – they deserve a Senator who shares their values and will fight for them – I plan to be that Senator."
